This method is applicable to hard metals with negligible ductility. Inaccurate results can be obtained if used for hard metals that show significant plastic deformation before fracture. In such cases, the method can be used for comparison purposes only.
A test piece that rests freely on two supports is broken by applying a force at the midpoint of the opening under conditions of short-term static application of force.
Alternatively, the force can be applied by a ball 10 mm in diameter. If a cylindrical test piece is used, the test piece can only be loaded via three rollers. As a result, a ball is only valid for test pieces with flat surfaces.
