ISO 3887 Steels - Determination of Decarburization Depth

Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 3887 standard defines the decarburization process of steels and describes methods for measuring the decarburization depth of steel products. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with the following title: TS EN ISO 3887 Steels - Determination of decarburization depth.

In this regard, there is also the ASTM E1077 standard test methods standard developed by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM) to estimate the decarburization depth of steel samples.

The decarburization depth is generally determined by examining the microstructure. The ISO 3887 standard describes three different methods to determine the decarburization depth of steel products. The selection and accuracy of these methods depend on the degree of decarburization, microstructure, carbon content of the product under study and the shape of the component. These methods, which are generally used in finished products, are: micrographic method, methods of measuring microdentation hardness and methods of determining carbon content.

Each of these methods prevents the need for further heat treatment. The parties decide among themselves which method will be applied. Unless otherwise agreed, the micrographic method is applied only when changes in carbon content are reflected in changes in the microstructure. This method is especially applicable to steels that show an annealed or normalized structure.

Micro strengthening hardness measurement methods for hardened or quenched and tempered steels are Vickers and Knoop methods performed in accordance with ISO 6507-1 standard and Knoop methods performed in accordance with ISO 4545 standard. These methods are only valid for hardened, tempered or heat treated steels.

Finally, in the methods of determining the carbon content, chemical or spectrographic analysis methods are applied and the carbon content is determined by measuring the gradient in a direction perpendicular to the surface.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of metallic testing services, there are also ISO 3887 standard tests.
