This international standard describes a transverse tensile test method for determining the dimensions of the tested specimen and the breaking strength and fracture site of a welded joint.
The ISO 4136 standard is applied for metallic materials in any form with joints made by any fusion welding process. Unless otherwise specified for certain points in this standard, the general principles of the ISO 6892 Metallic materials tensile test standard apply.
During testing, an increasing tensile load is applied until rupture occurs in a test specimen taken transversely from a welded joint. Unless otherwise stated, these tests should be performed at an ambient temperature of 23 +/- 5 degrees.
The mechanical or thermal processes used to take the test sample should in no way alter the properties of the test sample. Test results are determined according to ISO 6892 standard.
In addition to the information disclosed in the ISO 6892 standard, the test report to be prepared at the end of the tests must include information such as the type of the test sample, its location and, if necessary, the sketch, the temperature test result if the test was performed outside the ambient temperature, the location of the fracture in the material, and the shape and dimensions of the defects observed in the material.
The ISO 4136 standard was first developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and was last updated in 2012. This organization has been recognized as the UK's national standards body for over 100 years. Its committees work together to facilitate the design of British, European and international standards.
