ISO 4967 Steel - Determination of the Content of Non-Metallic Inclusions - Micrographic Method Using Standard Diagrams

This method is commonly used to evaluate the suitability of a steel for a particular use. However, precautions must be taken when using the method, as even with a large number of samples it is difficult to obtain reproducible results due to the influence of the test operator. This International Standard also provides for the determination of non-metallic inclusions by image analysis technologies.

The sample will be cut to provide a surface for examination. The specimen can be mechanically held or mounted to obtain a flat surface during polishing and to prevent rounding of the specimen's edges.

When polishing samples, it is important to avoid any tearing or deformation of inclusions or contamination of the polished surface so that the surface is as clean as possible and the shape of the inclusions is not affected. These precautions are especially important when the inclusions are small. It is recommended to use diamond paste for polishing. In some cases, heat treatment may be required prior to polishing to give the specimen the maximum possible hardness.
