ISO 4992-1 Steel Castings - Ultrasonic Testing - Part 1: Steel Castings for General Purposes

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 4992-1 testing. This standard specifies requirements for ultrasonic testing of general purpose steel castings (with ferritic structure) and methods for the determination of internal discontinuities by the pulse-echo technique.

ISO 4992-1 Steel Castings - Ultrasonic Testing - Part 1: Steel Castings for General Purposes

This standard applies to the ultrasonic inspection of steel castings up to and including 600 mm wall thickness, which have generally been treated with a grain-refining heat treatment. For larger wall thicknesses, specific agreements regarding test procedure and acceptance levels apply.

Except for discontinuities ≤10 mm in length, the largest dimension of the discontinuity in the direction along the wall should not exceed 10% of the wall thickness. Discontinuities ≤10 mm in length must not exceed a dimension of 25% of the wall thickness along the wall. As a single discontinuity or an area of discontinuity perpendicular or lateral to the surface, the greatest distance between discontinuities shall be 10 mm as the evaluation criterion.

The suitability of the material for ultrasonic testing is evaluated by comparing it with the echo height (usually the first back wall echo) and the noise level of a reference reflector. This assessment should be made at selected casting areas that represent the surface finish and overall thickness range of the objects to be tested. Evaluation areas will have parallel surfaces.

If the echo height of the smallest detectable flat-bottom or equivalent side-drilled hole at the far end of the test range to be evaluated is less than 6 dB above the noise level, the performance of the ultrasonic test is degraded. In this case, the diameter of the flat bottom or side drilled hole that can be detected with a signal to noise ratio of at least 6 dB should be recorded in the test report and the additional procedure should be agreed between the parties.
