ISO 4992-2 Steel Castings - Ultrasonic Testing - Part 2: Steel Castings for High Tension Components

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 4992-2 testing. This standard specifies requirements for ultrasonic testing of steel castings (with ferritic structure) for high-stress components and methods for determining internal discontinuities by the pulse-echo technique.

ISO 4992-2 Steel Castings - Ultrasonic Testing - Part 2: Steel Castings for High Tension Components

Buyers decide whether components are high voltage based on performance or safety needs. This standard applies to the ultrasonic inspection of steel castings up to and including 600 mm wall thickness, which have generally been treated with a grain-refining heat treatment. For larger wall thicknesses, specific agreements regarding test procedure and acceptance levels apply. This standard does not apply to austenitic steels and joint welds.

The purchaser shall specify the level of acceptance according to the required class for planar and volumetric discontinuities in each region of the casting and in each specified region. The edge region and single discontinuities extending to the core region will be considered as the edge region.

The suitability of the material for ultrasonic testing is evaluated by comparing it with the echo height (usually the first back wall echo) and the noise level of a reference reflector. This assessment should be made at selected casting areas that represent the surface finish and overall thickness range of the objects to be tested. Evaluation areas will have parallel surfaces.

If the echo height of the smallest detectable flat-bottom or equivalent side-drilled hole diameter at the far end of the test range to be evaluated is less than 6 dB above the noise level, the performance of the ultrasonic test is degraded. In this case, the diameter of the flat-bottomed or side-drilled hole that can be detected with a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 6 dB should be recorded in the test report and the additional procedure agreed between the manufacturer.

A coupling fluid conforming to ISO 16810 must be used. The coupling fluid must wet the test surface to ensure satisfactory sound transmission. The same coupling fluid must be used for calibration and all subsequent testing.
