According to Leeb, when testing hardness, a moving impact body strikes a surface and bounces back in a normal occurrence. The speed of the impacting object is measured before impact (vA) and after impact (vR). The amount of energy absorbed by the test piece and respectively expended in the test measures the dynamic Leeb hardness of the test piece. It is assumed that the impact body is not permanently deformed.
The ratio of impact and rebound velocity values gives the coefficient of return for the impact configuration and the energy used. This coefficient represents the proportion of the initial kinetic energy of the impact returned to the impact body within the contact time.
