ISO 642 Steel - Hardenability Test by Giving Water to the Tip (Jominy Test)

Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 642 standard describes the Jominy test method applied to determine the hardenability of steels. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with the following title: TS 1381 EN ISO 642 Steel - Hardness test by giving water to the tip (Jominy test). In this test method, a test piece with a diameter of 25 millimeters and a length of 100 millimeters is used and the hardenability of the steel is determined by the final quenching.

Jominy final quenching test is used to measure the hardenability of the steel, which is a measure of the hardening ability of the steel under certain conditions. In order to minimize thermal stresses and distortions in production components of different sizes, information is needed on the hardenability of steels in order to choose the appropriate combination of alloy steel and heat treatment.

Jominy final quenching test is a standard test method to measure the hardenability of steels in this regard. With this test, the ability of steel to be deepened by quenching is understood. The hardenability depends on the chemical composition of the steel and the previous treatment conditions, such as high heating. The information obtained from the tests is not just basic information. This information is also needed to understand the effects of alloys and steel microstructure in steels.

Hardenability is the ability of the steel to partially or completely transform from high temperature to hardened structure at a certain depth of the surface when cooled from high temperature under a certain condition. A quenching and tempering process is used to harden steels. In this way, a good combination of strength and toughness is provided to the steel. When choosing steel for a heat treated component, it is important to know the hardenability of the steel. Both alloying and microstructure, affects hardenability.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of metallic testing services, there are also ISO 642 standard tests.
