ISO 6506-1 Metallic Materials - Brinell Hardness Test

ISO 6506-1 specifies the Brinell hardness test method for metallic materials. It can be applied to both fixed-position and portable hardness testing machines.

For some specific materials or products certain international standards exist (eg ISO 4498) and refer to this international standard.

The test should be performed on a smooth and flat surface, free from oxide deposits, foreign matter and especially lubricants. The test piece must have a surface finish that will allow the diameter of the recess to be accurately measured.

Preparation should be done in such a way as to minimize any change in the surface, for example due to hot or cold working.

The test piece should be placed on a solid support. Contact surfaces must be clean and free of foreign matter. It is important that the test piece sits tightly on the support so that displacement does not occur during the test.

Bring the indentation into contact with the test surface and apply the test force in a direction perpendicular to the surface without impact, vibration or overflow until the applied force reaches the specified value. The time from the first application of force to the full test force should not be less than 2 s or more than 8 s.
