Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 6507-1 standard offers a test method for understanding the hardness levels of metal materials. This standard was published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with the following title: TS EN ISO 6507-1 Metallic materials - Vickers hardness test - Part 1: Test method.
Vickers hardness test is generally preferred because it is very easy to apply. Calculations made in this test method are independent of the formed size of the recess, and the test can be used for all materials, regardless of hardness. The basic principle of the ISO 6507-1 standard is to observe the ability of a material to resist plastic deformation against impact from a standard source, as in other hardness measurements. This test is applicable for all metal materials. The reason it is used so widely is that it has one of the largest scales among other hardness tests.
The hardness unit obtained in the ISO 6507-1 standard is known as the Vickers Pyramid Number or Diamond Pyramid Hardness. The hardness value is determined by the load on the surface area of the recess, not the normal area of the force. Therefore, it should not be perceived as a pressure value.
The Vickers hardness test was developed in 1921 as an alternative to the Brinell method to measure the hardness of metal materials.
When performing hardness tests, the lowest distance between the recesses and the distance from the recess to the edge of the sample are taken into consideration to prevent interaction between the regions and the effects of the edge. The lowest distances are determined differently for ISO 6507-1 and ASTM E384 standards.
Hardness testing is an important mechanical test for engineering design, analysis of structures, and material properties used. The suitability of a metal material for a particular application is done by testing the hardness.
