ISO 7989-1 specifies requirements for the testing of coating mass per unit area, other properties, as well as non-ferrous metallic coatings on steel wire products of circular or other cross-section.
ISO 7989-1 addresses general application requirements and is used for coatings for which special requirements are not specified in ISO 7989-2. Deviations are possible if necessary, especially for well-defined products. In such cases, the appropriate requirements are part of the relevant product standard.
The adhesion wrap test will be performed according to ISO 7802 and the coating will adhere to the steel under the coating. It should not crack or split to the extent that the coating strips can be removed by simply rubbing with the fingers. Exfoliation or removal during testing of small particles resulting from mechanical polishing of the coating surface or from contact with forming equipment will not be considered grounds for rejection.
The basis for the number and selection of test pieces should be defined in the product specification. In the absence of such a standard, the manufacturer and purchaser will agree on the degree of sampling.
The pavement mass per unit area will be determined using a gravimetric method. The metallic coating on one surface of the known area is dissolved in a suitable solution to completely remove the coating without attacking the surface of the steel wire. If necessary, a suitable inhibitor is added to the solution. The resulting mass loss is determined by weighing the test piece before and after the coating has dissolved.
