ISO 8492 specifies a method for determining the ability of circular section metallic pipes to undergo plastic deformation by flattening. It can also be used to reveal imperfections in tubes.
ISO 8492 is applicable to pipes with an outside diameter of not more than 600 mm and a thickness of not more than 15% of the outside diameter. The outer diameter or thickness range to which this international standard can be applied can be specified more precisely in the relevant product standard.
Straightening the end of a pipe or a test piece of a given length is straightened from a pipe in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pipe, until the distance between the plates measured under load in the straightening direction reaches a value specified in the relevant clause.
The testing machine can flatten the test piece to the prescribed distance H between two plane, parallel, rigid plates.
The width of the plates should exceed the width of the test piece after flattening, ie at least 1,6 D, and the length of the plates should extend over the entire length of the test piece.
The length of a test piece shall not be less than 10 mm and not more than 100 mm. The edges of the test piece can be rounded by filing or bevelled by other methods.
When the test is performed at the end of a full length pipe, the pipe shall be cut at right angles to the axis of the pipe to a depth of at least 80% of the outside diameter of the pipe. The cut shall be at a distance equal to the length of the test piece from the end of the pipe.
