ISO 9006 Uranium Metal and Uranium Dioxide Powder and Pellets, Determination of Nitrogen Content, Method Using Ammonia Sensing Electrode

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 9006 standard. This standard specifies an analytical method for the determination of nitrogen content in uranium metal and uranium dioxide powders and pellets. Applies to the determination of nitrogen present as nitride.

ISO 9006 Uranium Metal and Uranium Dioxide Powder and Pellets, Determination of Nitrogen Content, Method Using Ammonia Sensing Electrode

It is applicable to the determination of nitrogen present as nitride in uranium metal and uranium dioxide powder and pellets. The concentration range in which the method can be used is between 9 µg and 600 µg nitrogen per gram. Interference can occur from metals that form complex amines, but these are not normally present in significant quantities.

The sample is dissolved in a mixture of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide, a uranium(W) solution is produced and any nitrogen present as nitride is converted into ammonium ion.

Potassium carbonate is added to convert the ammonium ion. Ammonia and uranium(VI) are retained in solution as carbonate complex anions. Ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is found in complex metals that form amines. The ammonia content is measured using an ammonia-sensing electrode and a standard addition procedure.
