MIL DTL 5541F Standard Test for Chemically Recycled Coatings on Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of MIL DTL 5541F standard. This specification covers chemical conversion coatings formed by the reaction of chemical conversion materials with the surfaces of aluminum and aluminum alloys.

Chemical conversion coatings are of the following types and classes. The documents listed in this section are specified in sections 3 or 4 of this specification.

This section does not include documents referenced in other parts of this specification or suggested as additional information or examples. While every effort has been made to ensure the completeness of this list, users of documents are cautioned that they must meet all specified requirements of documents specified in sections 3 or 4 of this specification, whether listed or not.

If the material type is not specified, type I will be used. Substitutions of type I for type II coatings or type II for type I coatings are not permitted unless otherwise specified in the contract or order.

Materials used to produce a chemical conversion coating will be approved for the selected type, class, form and method of application in accordance with MIL DTL 81706 qualification requirements and accepted for listing on the applicable qualifying products list. Regenerative chemicals such as fluorides added to the bath to maintain its effectiveness should not degrade the performance of the applied coating.

Before coating, the base metal must be mechanically or chemically cleaned so that a water-resistant surface is obtained after rinsing. The use of ferrous abrasives such as steel wool, iron oxide, blush or steel wire is prohibited in all cleaning operations.

Contaminated machined parts will be cleaned with materials that will remove dirt without damaging the base metal, component or conversion coating. If the coating is damaged, the damaged area will be re-cleaned and re-coated, or the part will be rejected.
