Developed by the Royal Institute of Standardization of the Netherlands (NEN), the NEN 6008 standard has been published to meet the performance requirements (numerical values) of concrete reinforcing steel types. The full name of the standard is as follows: NEN 6008 Steel for reinforced concrete or concrete.
The EN 10080 standard, a European standard, provides general requirements, definitions and test requirements for the performance properties of weldable reinforcing steel. However, it does not provide further details to reinforce steel types with relevant performance requirements. This is why the publication of the NEN 6008 standard, a national standard, has been issued. At the same time, products falling within the scope of BRL 0501 concrete reinforcing steels standard comply with EN 10080 and NEN 6008 standards and are designed for use in concrete structures.
Concrete cannot meet the tensile forces formed in concrete over time and cracks. In order to meet these forces and limit cracks, steel bars are placed in the pulling zones. Steel rods are also used as winding reinforcement and sometimes to take pressure force. When it comes to concrete steel, reinforced concrete steel or construction steel, these steel bars are understood. Until the 1900s, iron rods were used in construction instead of steel. Nowadays, steel rods are used.
The surface of the steel bars are flat or notched. Those with protruding surfaces are called ribbed and those with recess are called steel profiles. However, the steel bar cross section is always circular, even if the surface is flat or with a recessed projection. Ribbed steel has more strength and combines more strongly with concrete. Ribbed steel bars are mostly used today. These are easy to peel off from concrete It is not. Flat surface steel bars are less powerful. In 2007, the use of flat steel bars in beams, columns and curtains was prohibited.
