EN 1621-3 Motorcyclists' Mechanical Impact Protective Clothing - Part 3: Motorcyclists' Chest Protectors - Requirements and Test Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1621-3 standard. This standard specifies the minimum coverage to be provided by riders' chest protectors. The standard includes requirements for the performance of preservatives under the influence and details of test methods, dimensions, ergonomic requirements and harmlessness, labeling and information provision requirements.

EN 1621-3 Motorcyclists' Mechanical Impact Protective Clothing - Part 3: Motorcyclists' Chest Protectors - Requirements and Test Methods

This document describes a product that provides limited protection against mechanical impact and falls on the chest. If the product is only intended for protection against roof stones (usually used in off-road driving), EN 14021 shall be used. This document will be used where a product is intended to be protected against mechanical impacts and lofted stones.

The use of viscoelastic materials in motorcycle armor allowed hand (glove) elbow, knee, shoulder, tailbone and back armor to be produced soft and flexible at rest. Upon arrival of the shock, the armor is extremely hard and has protective properties.

Viscoelastic armor is soft and body sculpting until impacted. It reacts quickly to form a hard mass on impact. D3O armor hardens from edge to edge. Sas-Tec armor is considered a progressive reactive armor as it hardens to a sufficient degree to withstand the force. The material prevents trauma to the human body by three methods:

Shock Absorption: The material absorbs impact energy through phase change (hardening).
Shock Delay: The material delays the transmission of some shock to the human body for a longer period of time.
Distribution: Blows are distributed over larger areas of the body.

Viscoelastic armor can achieve higher levels of shock / impact mitigation benefits with greater comfort and less mass than traditional rigid armor - foam laminate solutions. Hybrid armor is layered with hard shell outer materials. The European standard EN-1621 is used to rate the effectiveness of the armor.
