EN 1621-4 Motorcyclists' Mechanical Impact Protective Clothing - Part 4: Motorcyclists' Inflatable Protectors - Requirements and Test Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1621-4 standard. This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for mechanically activated inflatable protectors for motorcycle riders.

EN 1621-4 Motorcyclists' Mechanical Impact Protective Clothing - Part 4: Motorcyclists' Inflatable Protectors - Requirements and Test Methods

It specifies the minimum level of protection, the minimum response time of the inflated bag, and the minimum coverage to be provided by motorcycle riders' protectors worn by riders.

The requirements of this standard apply to various designs of inflatable restraints and refer to all body areas and combinations that are claimed to be protected. Inflatable protectors covered by this standard can be incorporated into motorcycle clothing or fitted with suitable restraint systems and worn on their own.

Performance requirements are specified to provide the best practical compromise between protection, comfort and ergonomic requirements. The force levels in the tests are not directly related to the forces that drivers are exposed to in accidents. However, experience has shown that products that meet the requirements of this European Standard reduce the frequency and severity of these injuries.

This European Standard contains requirements for the performance of the system during an accident and details of test methods, sizing, ergonomics, harmlessness, labeling and information provision requirements. Inflatable protectors other than those that are mechanically activated are not covered by this standard.

Potential users of this standard are testing institutes, certification bodies and manufacturers. This European Standard has been prepared, under an mandate granted to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, to provide a tool that complies with the Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 89/686/EEC on "Personal Protective Equipment".
