Motorcyclist Protection Equipment Tests

Back Protectors, Impact Attenuation (EN 1621-2)

The EN 1621-2 standard, which is a European standard, describes the characteristics and test methods of the back protection equipment, which is one of the protective clothing of motorcyclists against mechanical impact. In our country, it has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 1621-2 Protective clothing against mechanical impact for motorcycle riders - Part 2: Back protectors for motorcycle riders - Properties and test methods.

Back Protectors, Impact Attenuation (EN 1621-2)

This standard describes the minimum coverage to be provided by the back protectors that motorcyclists wear in normal traffic conditions. This standard contains details of the requirements and test methods for the performance of protective equipment under impact. It also describes requirements for sizing, ergonomic requirements, harmlessness, labeling, and information.

The EN 1621-2 standard is designed to cover motorcycle riders' back and waist protectors. It uses a similar design and testing methodology as in part one of the standard for testing limb protectors. However, the computational approach is different to better simulate the way ridge protectors work.

This standard has three different back protectors to promote the adoption of protection certified in various motorcycle and rider type disciplines: full back, mid-back and lower back (waist) protectors.

Two performance levels have been established for motorcyclists' back protectors: level 1 and level 2. To pass the standard, the maximum transmitted force should be below 18kN and a single value should not exceed 24kN. The standard also includes optional impact tests to evaluate performance in 40 degrees high and minus 10 degrees low temperature environments. It also includes some additional tests after storage under humid conditions.

Our organization also provides back protectors, impact attenuation (EN 1621-2) testing services within the framework of motorcyclist protection equipment testing services.
