Magnetic Particle Inspection

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is a non-destructive test (NDT) method used to check surface and near-surface discontinuities in materials containing iron. Our magnetic particle tests are performed on-site or in one of our state-of-the-art laboratories.

Magnetic Particle Inspection

Since this method relies on a magnetic field to produce results, it works best on ferrous materials such as nickel, iron, cobalt and some alloys. Components such as logs, rods, castings, forgings, fasteners, welded parts and extrusions are also widely tested using magnetic particle inspection.

Magnetic particle testing methods

Magnetic particle inspection can be done using a wet or dry method, depending on the application. In either method, the product is electrically charged to create a magnetic field. The ferrous iron particles are then applied in a dry or wet suspension.

If there is an existing crack or other defect, the particles will be drawn off and accumulate around the leak for an "indicator". The indication is then evaluated to determine the characteristics and cause of the defect. The results enable our Engaged Experts to understand the type and severity of discontinuities on the surface or bottom surface of the part.
