JIS Z-2801 Antibacterial products - Antibacterial activity and effectiveness test standard has been developed by the Japanese Industry Standards (JSI). When saying antimicrobial, the condition that prevents the growth of bacteria on the surface of the products is expressed. This test method applies to a variety of products other than textiles, such as plastic products, metal products and ceramic products. However, this test method can also be used for textile products if it is deemed appropriate from the product's usage conditions and product design.
The types of bacteria to be used in the tests are staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538P) and escherichia coli (ATCC 8739).
The standard in question is a quantitative antimicrobial test standard (TS ISO 22196 Standard for measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other nonporous surfaces), which is widely requested for plastics, foams and textile products and is harmonized with the ISO 22196 standard.
To measure the growth that may occur on plastic and hard material surfaces, the material is left for 24 hours after inoculation by the two bacteria mentioned above. The JIS Z 2801 standard is one of the most demanding, fast and reliable antimicrobial surface tests for antibacterial activity and efficacy. With the endurance test applied with this test, it provides important information about the antimicrobial performance of a product when exposed to different environmental conditions such as heat, humidity and ultraviolet ray.
Although JIS Z 2801 standard is designed for materials and products entering the Japanese market, this test method is applied in many countries today. Essentially these tests are reliable and accepted worldwide antimicrobial tests and are harmonized for various countries. Therefore, the ISO 22196 standard published by the International Standards Organization is a harmonized version of the JIS Z 2801 standard.
