MIL-A-8625F Test for Anodized Coatings for Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of MIL-A-8625F testing. This standard is the model for most anodizing specified for military and aerospace products. It covers requirements for six types and two classes of anodizing for non-architectural applications.

MIL-A-8625F also forms the basis for many anodizing specifications owned by individual companies. Almost all of these proprietary specifications express one or more of the requirements of this shaft specification.

The standard includes broad machining conditions for anodizing. It also provides important performance and acceptance criteria for properties such as coating weight, corrosion resistance, light fastness, paint adhesion, abrasion resistance and painting. In addition, standards are set for general appearance, workmanship, contact marks, inspection, process control and testing.

Anodized coating types and classes are:

  • Type I Chromic acid anodizing (conventional)
  • Type IB Chromic acid anodizing (low voltage method)
  • Type IC Non-Chromic acid anodizing (for use as a non-chromate alternative for Type I and IB coatings)
  • Type II Sulfuric acid anodizing (conventional)
  • Type IIB Sulfuric acid anodizing (for use as a non-chromate alternative for Type I and IB coatings) Type
  • III Hard anodizing
  • Class 1 Unpainted
  • Class 2 Painted

Types I and IB are used when exceptional corrosion resistance, paint adhesion and fatigue resistance are required.

Types IC and IIB are used for the same qualifications. An example of a Type IC would be the Boeing Boric-Sulfuric Anodizing process. Type IIB is a thin film sulfuric acid anodizer.

The standard specifies that the anodic coating thickness must be specifically specified in the purchasing documentation or part drawing.
