The MIL-C-43665 standard, developed by the US Department of Defense, is designed to manage the mothproofing process (mothproofing) of wool stock, upper, yarn or fabric. Mothproofing treatment is designed to be used as a mothproofing agent in wool fabrics and blankets.
Moths are harmful insects that can destroy fabric and other materials. They feed only on animal fibres, especially wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt and leather. These materials contain keratin, a fibrous protein that moth larvae can digest. Cotton and synthetic fabrics, such as polyester and rayon, are rarely attacked unless blended with wool or heavily soiled with food stains or body oils.
According to the MIL-C-43665 standard, the wool content must be mothproof. When white and colored wools are mixed, white wool need not be mothproof if the white wool content is 15 percent or less. However, the total mothproof composition in the finished fabric must comply with this standard. When white wool in blends of white and colored wool exceeds 15 percent, all white wool in addition to dyed wool must be treated with a mothproofing agent.
The finished fabric created must comply with the requirements of the applicable standard for untreated fabric. The percentage of mothproofing compound stated above is based on weight of pure compound over wool fiber concentration after five cycles of dry cleaning when tested.
According to this standard, fabric labels must include the phrase mothproof in the nomenclature.
