The updated version of MIL-STD-1474 applies to the acquisition and product improvement of all designed or purchased (non-development items) facilities, systems, subsystems, and equipment that emit acoustic noise or contain noise sources.
The purpose of this standard is to address emitted noise levels during all typical operating conditions and throughout the life cycle of the system in question. Covers tests for steady-state noise and impulsive noise from weapons and explosive ordnance materials for military vehicles, aircraft, ships, general equipment, and portable shelters.
Design criteria for reducing noise levels, techniques for measuring noise levels, and tools for establishing safe criteria for firing large and small-caliber weapons were based on unscientific data. The MIL-STD-1474 update provides noise engineers and scientists an opportunity to create scientifically based requirements that are achievable and measurable.
The design criteria for determining ship rig noise requirements were outdated and incompatible with Navy and Coast Guard noise criteria for ship rig. The update to the military standard allowed the Navy to code noise requirements for ship's equipment and set noise requirements for areas on board.
Updated ship rigging and ship compartment noise requirements will be added to the detailed design specifications of the new shipbuilding to produce quieter ships and reduce the noise injury rate for seafarers and seafarers. In addition, the assessment and mitigation methods outlined in the military standard will allow the operational Navy to better protect personnel deployed on legacy ships.
