MIL PRF-49291 Standard Test for Fiber Optic

Optical fiber and connector tested to MIL-PRF-49291 (Optical Fiber General Specification) must be capable of transmitting signals from a source to a target while being exposed to radiation hazards and harsh climates in military and aerospace applications.

Test specimens consist of single-mode and multimode optical fibers with three different combinations of fiber core and sheath composition.

Applicable combinations may consist of:

Fiber radii tested can range from 4,0 to 8,5 µm, 8,5 to 10 µm, 50/125 µm, 62,5/125 µm, 100/140 µm, 200/230 µm, and 400/430 µm. Different fiber sizes must be able to transmit signals with low attenuation levels. The low-level attenuation capacity is tested according to that of TIA-455-62 during severe bending of the fiber; In MIL-PRF-49291 this test is called Macrobend Attenuation.

During use of any MIL connector while plugged in in the field of use, the mating pair may be exposed to harsh environments such as severe bending (Macrobend Attenuation per TIA-455-62), radiating fields (Nuclear Radiation Resistance testing samples optically). Fibers are screened according to product-dependent optical criteria based on fiber radius and type (singlemode and multimode).
