MIL-STD-1312-13 Fastener Double Shear Test

The test described in this standard can be difficult because the test speed is specified in terms of stress and load, but the speed must remain constant throughout the entire test.

Additionally, complete failure of the fastener is undesirable, so break detection and stopping machine motion are critical.

A hardened tool steel blade with an accurately tolerant groove of the diameter of the fastener to be tested is inserted into a fastener support fork with similar grooves. There is a steel support to hold these two components. The fastener to be tested rests on the fork and a clamping force is applied directly on top of the blade to cut the fastener twice.

These luminaires are normally supplied in sets of various sizes as specified by the customer. Because each fastener diameter requires a separate fixture, custom sizes can be produced to test custom fasteners.
