MIL-STD-1312-20 Standard Test for Fastener Single Shear Test Fixtures

Since double shear is the preferred method, the single shear test should only be used if the fasteners are not long enough to be tested in double shear as specified in MIL-STD-1312-13. As a general rule, the length of a fastener must be at least twice the nominal diameter to use a double shear device.

The fastener to be tested is passed through two hardened steel blades where each blade has an accurately toleranced hole of the same diameter as the fastener. Removable blades allow the same fixture to be used to test different sizes of fasteners and only require customizing blades for each fastener size. A clamping force is then applied to the top of the fixture to cut the fastener in a single fashion.
