The connectors are designed for quick and reliable release of the tank from the aircraft. Weapons depots are typically only released when the aircraft is attacking a target under the command of SMS-generated signals. For example, any type of tank can be released during launch, a non-aggressive release that can be used to lighten the weight of the aircraft in an emergency.

There are two discrete groups of signals. The interlock split is used by the aircraft to determine whether the store is connected to the aircraft. This interface uses two signals, Lock and Return Lock. These signals are simply interconnected inside the store, and when the store leaves the aircraft, this connection is broken on the aircraft side.
The aircraft determines the presence of the store by measuring the continuity between the two signals. Certain stores, typically weapons, can be commanded into mods that can be dangerous if not managed properly, such as arming a warhead. Enabling the release permission separate signal is used to ensure that the store only accepts such a command when authorized.
