MIL STD-2041 Standard Test for Control of Hazardous Substances

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of MIL STD-2041 testing. The United States military defense standard, the MIL-STD-2041 standard, defines uniform requirements for the control of harmful materials in products and equipment that come into contact with special-purpose equipment. This standard is used to determine the levels of harmful substances such as halides, sulfur and low melting point alloys in products and materials that come into contact with special equipment intended for use in the nuclear or defense industries.

MIL STD-2041 Standard Test for Control of Hazardous Substances

In tests performed in advanced laboratories, water-soluble halides (bromine, chlorine and fluorine), sulfur, total halides, total sulfur, mercury, phosphorus and low melting point alloys (antimony, bismuth) have been tested in accordance with both military and International Standards.

Quantitative results are provided for many harmful materials, including the concentration of cadmium, lead, tin and zinc. The ISO 17025 standard includes 10 CFR 50 Annex B and 10 CFR Part 21 quality management system requirements to support nuclear commercial grade allocation plans and MIL-STD-2041 material verification tests.

MIL-STD-2041 hazardous materials control test results are typically reported in parts per million (ppm) and compared to levels specified in standard or customer requirements. A certificate of conformity is available upon request.

The main tests performed under this standard are:

  • Preparation techniques;
  • Boiling water leaching preparation;
  • bromine oxidation;
  • Parr bomb oxidation;
  • Acid digestion;
  • microwave digestion;
  • Ion chromatography;
  • Inductively coupled plasma, optical emission spectroscopy.

If a material is not specified, corrosion resistant steels should be used. In addition, the sink must comply with the size and weight requirements in the table given in the standard. The installation must be made of bronze conforming to the MIL-B-16444 standard. Pipes should in all cases be of equal thickness to standard iron pipe sizes with the same opening cross-sectional area. Where weights are not specified, fittings must be strong enough to withstand Service.
