NATO AEP-2920 Standard Test for Evaluation of Personal Armor, Bullet and Fragmentation Threats

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of NATO AEP-2920 standard. STANAG 2920 (ballistic test method for personal armor materials and combat clothing) is used to measure the ability of materials to stop fragments and shrapnel. The measuring technique was originally developed for body armor.

According to STANAG 2920, tests are performed by shooting FSPs (Fragment Simulation Bullets) at different speeds onto the test sample while measuring the velocity of each FSP. By varying the velocities, an estimate of the ballistic limit, which is the rate at which the material beats the part, can be obtained after a series of shots.

Combat units are rarely injured or killed by bullets, but are at high risk from primary (direct) and secondary (peripheral) fragmentation.

The amount of variables associated with the interactions between various threats, scenarios, and different physical mechanisms complicates the improvised explosive device threat assessment.

Similarly, the nature of these threats and the wide range of variables associated with such threats make it difficult to establish a definitive method for testing procedures. However, it is possible to categorize a wide variety of improvised explosive device threats using the most common attack scenarios.
