NIJ 0106.01 Technology Assessment Program for Ballistic Helmets NIJ Standard

This revision redefines the classification system and establishes threat levels and test rounds in accordance with the accompanying NIJ standards for ballistic protective equipment and supplies.

The ballistic threat posed by a projectile depends, among other things, on its composition, shape, caliber, mass and impact velocity. Due to the wide variety of cartridges and handloads available in a given caliber, helmets that will beat a standard test round may not be able to beat other loads of the same caliber.

For example, a helmet that prevents penetration of a 357 Magnum test round may or may not beat the 357 Magnum round at higher speed. Similarly, for the same strike rates, non-deforming or armor-piercing projectiles pose a significantly greater penetration threat than an equivalent lead-core projectile of the same caliber. The test ammunition specified in this standard represents common threats to the law enforcement community.
