Wind Tunnel Test

From speed skaters to spacecraft, designers use wind tunnel testing when designing for optimum aerodynamics and performance. This test harnesses the power of new technologies. For centuries, inventors have worked to determine how air moves over planes, vehicles, and other objects. But technological advances in recent years have made sophisticated wind tunnel testing a reality for designers and manufacturers of all kinds of products, including cars, wind turbines and even clothing.

Wind Tunnel Test

A wind tunnel is a structure through which air flows. This structure is generally in the form of a duct where the air is driven by electrically powered fans or another system with the same effect. The type and size of the wind tunnel used depends on the size of the object under test as well as the desired flow conditions. This is why there are many different types of wind tunnels. In general, these are classified according to the speed of operation of the vehicle: subsonic, transonic or supersonic.

Wind tunnels are routinely used to test aircraft as well as cars, spacecraft, or any engineering application where the effects of airflow around a body are important. In short, they are used to test almost anything that moves in the air, from wind tunnels to parachutes and drones. But wind tunnels also use it to test the aerodynamic drag of athletes.

When testing wind tunnels, fans produce consistent airflow. The tested object is held stationary, the air moves around this object, and the expected real-life air movement is simulated as closely as possible. Meanwhile, the aerodynamic forces acting on the object, such as drag and lift, are measured with accurate load measuring devices. The features of the flow around the object are visualized using several techniques meant to make the air visible (such as smoke injection and oil flow over the test object).

Wind tunnel tests validate the designers' calculations and identify areas for improvement in their design. For example, the aerodynamic performance of airplanes is improved in this way. By reducing friction and enhancing lift, the aircraft remains stable and controllable.

Our organization also provides wind tunnel testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
