This European standard specifies a test method for the quantitative determination of the specified cetane number (ICN) of medium distillate fuels and mixture components intended for use in compression ignition engines.

The test method uses a constant volume combustion chamber with direct injection of fuel into heated compressed air. Calibrating the apparatus using mixtures of primary reference materials on a scale of 0 to 100 enables the use of fuel ignition delays measured from the resulting pressure rise to determine and report ICN results.
This European standard applies to both petroleum and non-petroleum medium distillate fuels, hydrocarbon oils, petroleum-sand based fuels, blend components, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), fuel blends containing biodiesel material, diesel fuels containing cetane.
However, users who apply this standard especially to non-conventional distillate fuels are warned that the relationship between cetane number and combustion behavior in real engines is not yet fully understood. This European standard covers the calibrated range of 35 ICN to 85 ICN.
