This International Standard defines the practices and procedures currently believed to be most likely to result in representative sampling and therefore accurate water determination. However, the accuracy of water determination in Pipeline samples taken using automatic Sampling Devices will depend on the arrangement and characteristics of all the various elements that make up the sampling System and the accuracy of subsequent analytical procedures.
Manual pipeline sampling methods are adequate for homogeneous liquids whose composition and quality do not change significantly over time. If this is not the case, automated sampling is the recommended procedure as continuous or repetitive extraction of small samples from a Pipeline ensures that any changes in bulk contents are reflected in the collected Sample. For the sample to be as representative as possible, it is essential to ensure that the recommendations of this International Standard regarding the required homogeneity of the liquid at the sampling site and the required frequency of extraction of small samples are met.
The equipment and techniques described have generally been used to sample stabilized crude Oil, but can also be applied to unstabilized crude oil and refined products, taking into account the associated safety precautions and sampling difficulties.
This International standard refers to available sampling methods and the type of equipment currently in use. However, it is not intended to exclude new equipment not yet developed for commercial use, provided that such equipment enables representative samples to be obtained and complies with the general requirements and procedures of this International Standard.
