ISO 10370 Petroleum Products - Determination of Carbon Residue - Micro Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of ISO 10370 testing. ISO 10370 specifies a method for determining the amount of carbon residue in the range of 0,10% (m/m) to 30,0% (m/m) remaining after evaporation and pyrolysis of petroleum products under specified conditions.

The carbon residual value serves as an approximation of the propensity of petroleum products to form carbonaceous deposits under similar degradation conditions and can be useful in assessing the relative propensity of products of the same class to form carbon. In this case, caution should be exercised in interpreting the results.

This International Standard also applies to petroleum products that are composed primarily of distilled material and may yield a carbon residue of less than 0,10% (m/m).

Both the ash-forming components as defined by ISO 6245 and the non-volatile additives present in the sample contribute to the carbon residue value and are included in the total reported value.

A weighed portion of the oil sample is placed in a glass vial and heated to 500°C under a controlled flow of inert (nitrogen) gas for a specified period of time. Volatile substances formed during the reactions are swept away by the inert gas. The remaining carbonaceous residue is weighed.
