ISO 562 Hard Coke and Coke, Standard Test Method for Determination of Volatile Matter

In this International standard, volatile matter is determined as the mass loss that is less than that due to moisture when coal or coke is heated under standard conditions without contact with air.

The test is empirical and careful control of the heating rate, final temperature and total time of the test is essential to obtain reproducible results. It is also important to remove air from the coal or coke during heating to prevent oxidation.

Seating of the crucible lid is therefore critical. The moisture content of the sample is determined simultaneously with the volatile matter so that the appropriate correction can be made.

The mineral matter associated with the sample may also lose mass under test conditions, the magnitude of the loss being dependent on both the nature and amount of minerals present.
