UOP 614 Standard Test for Heptane-Insoluble Substance in Petroleum Oils Using Membrane Filters

This method is for determination of heptane or toluene insoluble material in petroleum oils. This method covers the range of insoluble matter from 0.01 to 25% by mass.

Solid particulate matter interferes. More viscous or solid materials such as asphalt can be analyzed using this method, but will require the use of a heated sonication bath (up to 60°C). The data provided by this method can be used as an index of the coking tendency given the suitability of petroleum oils as charging stocks for cracking or other processes.

A weighed sample is dispersed in n-heptane at ambient temperature, digested at 80°C, and filtered through a weighed membrane filter. Samples that are not completely dispersed cannot be analyzed. The membrane filter is dried and reweighed to obtain the weight of the insoluble matter.

Asphaltenes are defined as material found in oil fractions that are insoluble in mild paraffinic solvents. They are fine, powdery, black-brown solids and polymeric materials covering a wide range of molecular weights. Their chemical composition is quite complex. They appear to be closely related to high molecular weight semi-polar naphthenic materials that require long digestion times for separation.
