The ash remaining after coal or coke is burned in air is derived from inorganic complexes and associated mineral matter found in the original coal material. Therefore, the result of the determination is "ash", not "ash content", as the coal does not contain ash.
The amount of sulfur retained in the ash depends in part on ashing conditions and strict adherence to the specified conditions is required to obtain values on a comparable basis for ash.
The test part is heated at a certain rate in air to a temperature of 815°C ± 10°C and held at this temperature until it becomes constant in mass.
