The determination of moisture in the general analysis test sample is necessary to correct the results of certain analytical determinations, eg. volatile matter and hydrogen, the effect of water in the determination and to ensure that all determinations are corrected on a dry basis.
Because hard coal is hygroscopic, its moisture will change with changes in atmospheric humidity and therefore moisture in the overall analysis test sample should be determined when portions are weighed for other analytical determinations. If test sections are weighed simultaneously for several analytical determinations, a single simultaneous moisture determination will suffice to correct these analyses.
