ISO 18134-3 Solid Biofuels - Determination of Moisture Content - Oven Drying Method - Part 3: Standard Test for Moisture in General Analysis Sample

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 18134-3 testing. ISO 18134-3 describes a method for determining moisture in an analysis test sample by drying it in an oven. It is intended to be used for general analysis samples according to EN 14780. The method described in this section of ISO 18134-3 is applicable to all solid biofuels. The moisture content (as received) of solid biofuels is always reported against the total mass (wet base) of the test sample.

Since small particle size biofuels are very hygroscopic, their moisture content will vary with atmospheric humidity and therefore the humidity of the test portion is determined simultaneously with the determination of the calorific value, carbon content and nitrogen content of the sample.

The term moisture content can be misleading when used with biomass materials because untreated biomass often contains varying amounts of volatile compounds (extracts) that can evaporate when determining moisture content by oven drying.

The test portion of the solid biofuel is dried in an air atmosphere at a temperature of 105°C until constant mass is achieved and percent moisture is calculated from the mass loss of the test portion. Automated equipment such as gravimetric analyzers can be used when the method has been validated with biomass reference test samples of the selected biomass type.

To determine the total moisture content, test samples will be taken in accordance with EN 14778 and taken to the laboratory in hermetically sealed containers or bags. A test section should be prepared according to EN 14780 and the nominal upper dimension should be reduced to less than 1 mm.
