EN ISO 3170 specifies manual methods to be used for sampling liquid or semi-liquid hydrocarbons, tank residues and deposits from fixed tanks, railcars, land vehicles, ships and barges, drums and cans, or liquids pumped into pipelines.
EN ISO 3170 applies to the sampling of petroleum products, crude oils and intermediates stored in tanks at or near atmospheric pressure or transferred by pipelines and transported as liquids at temperatures from ambient to 200 degrees Celsius. The specified sampling procedures are not designed to sample specific petroleum products that are the subject of other International Standards, such as electrical insulating oils (IEC 60475), liquefied petroleum gases (ISO 4257), liquefied natural gases (ISO 8943), and gaseous.
This International Standard refers to available sampling methods and the type of equipment currently in use. However, it is not intended to exclude the use of new equipment not yet developed for commercial use, provided that equipment ensures that samples are obtained in accordance with the requirements and procedures of this International Standard.
The purpose of this standard is to standardize the conditions for manual sampling of liquid/semi-liquid hydrocarbons from a tank, drum or pipeline. If the hydrocarbon to be sampled has an inhomogeneous character that differs significantly in composition or includes sediment and water, hand samples should not be expected to be representative, but may allow assessment of the degree of inhomogeneity and estimates of quality and quantity.
Tank sampling procedures of liquid hydrocarbons under inert gas pressure are included, along with techniques for sampling from tanks equipped with vapor emission control systems. In many countries it is recognized that some or all of the items covered by this International Standard are subject to mandatory regulations imposed by the laws of those countries. In the event of any conflict between such mandatory regulations and this International Standard, the former prevails.
