ISO 5661 Petroleum Products - Testing for Hydrocarbon Liquids

This standard gives a method for determining this amount of clear and light colored hydrocarbon liquids such as those used in capacitors, transformers, circuit breakers and oily type cables.

This method is applicable to liquids with indices in the range of 1,33 to 1,7 and temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Not valid within specified accuracy for liquids with bubble points too close to the test temperature to obtain a reading before significant degradation occurs.

Liquid certified reference materials are available for the range 33 to 1.50, but not above this range. The accuracy of the method is not easily checked in the range of 1.5 to 1.7.

The refractive index of a liquid varies with its composition and the nature and amount of contaminants retained in solution. If the refractive index of an unused fluid is known, determinations made after periods of service on the same fluid can provide a basis for estimating any change in composition or degree of contamination from dissolution of the impurity.
