EN ISO 9029 Crude Oil - Determination of Water - Distillation Method

The EN ISO 9029 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a method for the determination of water in crude oil by distillation. Precision data have been determined only for water contents up to 1%.

EN ISO 9029 Crude Oil - Determination of Water - Distillation Method

Crude oil, liquid hydrocarbons formed by the metamorphosis of organic material in the Earth and stored in porous rocks are called crude oil. The term “crude” at the beginning of oil indicates that it is a raw material and has not yet been processed.

Knowing the water content of crude oil is important in refining, purchasing, selling and transferring products. The amount of water determined by this method is used to correct the volume involved in the surveillance transfer of oil.

A test portion is heated under reflux conditions with a water-immiscible solvent distilled with the water in the sample. Condensed solvent and water are continuously separated in a trap. The water settles in the graduated section of the trap and the solvent returns to the distillation flask.

The proposed apparatus consists of a glass still, a condenser, a graduated glass trap and a heater. Other types of apparatus may be used for this International Standard, provided they can be shown to work with the apparatus of choice within the specified precision according to ISO 4259.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also EN ISO 9029 standard tests.
