ISO 3104 Petroleum Products - Transparent and Opaque Liquids - Determination of Kinematic Viscosity and Calculation of Dynamic Viscosity

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 3104 standard. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the ISO 3104 standard specifies Procedure A using manual glass viscometers and Procedure B for determining the kinematic viscosity (v) of liquid petroleum products, both transparent and opaque, and Procedure B using glass capillary viscometers in an automated setup.

ISO 3104 Petroleum Products - Transparent and Opaque Liquids - Determination of Kinematic Viscosity and Calculation of Dynamic Viscosity

The volume of liquid that will flow under gravity through a calibrated glass capillary viscometer. The dynamic viscosity, η, is obtained by multiplying the measured kinematic viscosity by the density of the fluid, ρ. The kinematic viscosity range covered in this test method is from 20 mm 150 /s to 0,2 mm 2 /s in the temperature range of ?300.000 °C to +2 °C.

Many petroleum products and some non-petroleum materials are used as lubricants, and correct equipment operation depends on the appropriate viscosity of the fluid used. In addition, the viscosity of many petroleum fuels is important for predicting optimum storage, transportation and operating conditions. Therefore, accurate measurement of viscosity is essential for many product specifications.

The result from this standard depends on the behavior of the sample and is primarily intended for application to liquids where shear stress and shear rates are proportional (Newtonian flow behavior). However, different results can be obtained from viscometers of different capillary diameters if the viscosity changes significantly with shear rate. Procedure and precision values are included for residual fuel oils that exhibit non-Newtonian behavior under certain conditions.
