ISO 4316 Surfactants - Determination of pH of Aqueous Solutions - Potentiometric Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 4316 standard. The ISO 4316 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a method for determining the pH of aqueous solutions of surfactants. This method is only valid when specified as such in the specific standard for each product.

ISO 4316 Surfactants - Determination of pH of Aqueous Solutions - Potentiometric Method

It covers the potentiometric measurement of the potential difference between a glass electrode immersed in an aqueous solution of surfactant and a reference electrode.

Two Standard buffer solutions, selected from those commonly used, are required to calibrate the pH meter. The pH values should, if possible, be on either side of the expected pH of the test Solution, but if not, there should be no more than 1 pH unit difference from the expected pH.

The preparation and concentration of the test solution obtained from the test portion should be specified in the specific Standard for each product. Calibrate the pH meter according to the manufacturer's instructions using two selected standard buffer solutions at the specified temperature.

ISO 4316 Test Procedure

The temperatures of the electrodes, the water used for washing, and the Standard buffer solutions or test solutions for all measurements should be set to 20 + 1 C and as close to each other as possible. These temperatures should not differ by more than 1 C.

After the instrument has been calibrated, wash the electrodes first with water and then with the test solution. Mix the test solution, add sufficient volume to the measuring cup and immerse the electrodes in it. Check that the pH meter reading is stable for 1 minute and then record the value.

Repeat with a new portion of test solution. If the second measurement differs from the first by 0 pH units (or more), take a third measurement. If this value is insufficient, repeat the test including calibration.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 4316 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
