Instrumental methods for the analysis of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen are now widely and regularly used, often in preference to previously developed chemical methods for which International standards are available.
It was thought that the procedures adopted in these instrumental methods should be standardized as much as possible. As a result, an ISO technical specification has recently been developed for solid mineral fuels.
The procedures to be followed when instrumentally determining the mass fractions of total carbon (including those present as carbonates), total hydrogen (including those present as water) and nitrogen are set out in ISO/TS 12902 and form the basis of this technical specification.
