Solid biofuels contain the elements chlorine, sodium and potassium. They can contribute significantly to use problems such as corrosion, fouling and slagging in furnaces. They also affect gas emissions from thermal processes.
The chlorine content in solid biofuels exists mainly as water-soluble inorganic salts such as sodium and potassium chlorides or other ion exchangeable forms. Determination of water-soluble chloride content is therefore an alternative and simple method to obtain chlorine level information in solid biofuels. However, the water-soluble chloride content should not be confused with the total chlorine content in fuels.
In solid biofuels, sodium and potassium can be found both as minerals and as salts. Salts of these elements can be extracted with water and are readily volatile during thermal conversion. By determining the water-soluble content of sodium and potassium, an estimate of the aggressive content of the elements can be obtained in relation to potential slag and contamination issues. For some biofuels, such as straw, experience has shown that the content of water-soluble sodium and potassium corresponds to the total content of the elements. The water-soluble sodium and potassium content should not be confused with the total content of the elements.
