EN ISO 20823 specifies a test method for determining the relative flammability of liquids when in contact with a hot metal surface at a constant temperature, but it is also possible to measure liquid ignition temperatures by adjusting the manifold temperature.
It is primarily used to evaluate the resistance to ignition of fire resistant hydraulic fluids that are difficult to ignite by definition.
It can be used with other more flammable liquid types at lower surface temperatures, but this can significantly increase the hazards of this procedure.
A 10 ml portion of test liquid is dropped from a predetermined height and at a given rate into a tube heated to 700°C or another temperature in a series. The resulting spray is inspected for glare or burning both in the tube and after dripping from the tube.
