EN ISO 4263-3 specifies a method for determining the aging behavior of synthetic hydraulic fluids in the HFDR, HFDU, HEES and HEPG categories as defined, for example, in ISO 12922 and ISO 15380.
Aging is accelerated by the presence of oxygen and metal. catalysts at high temperature and the degradation of the liquid is followed by changes in the acid number. Other parts of EN ISO 4263 specify similar procedures for determining the aging behavior of mineral oils and certain categories of fire resistant fluids used in hydraulic and other applications.
Other signs of fluid degradation may occur, such as insoluble sludge formation, catalyst coil corrosion, or reduction in viscosity, which may indicate oxidation of the fluid but not be reflected in the calculated oxidation life. The relationship of these events to field ministry is being investigated.
EN ISO 4263-3 can be used to compare the oxidation stability of liquids that are not prone to water contamination. However, due to the large number of individual field service applications, the correlation between EN ISO 4263-3 results and actual service performance can vary considerably and is best decided by experience.
The precision of EN ISO 4263-3 for synthetic hydraulic fluids is unknown because interlaboratory data are not available. EN ISO 4263-3 may not be suitable for use in specifications or in case of controversial results unless these data are available.
However, sensitivity is given as a guide for hindered turbine oils, as an indication of the sensitivity that can be achieved for synthetic hydraulic fluids.
