ISO 4262 Petroleum Products, Determination of Carbon Residue, Standard Test for Ramsbottom Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 4262 standard. The principle of the method stated is to weigh a test portion into a glass coke bulb with a capillary opening and place it in a metal furnace maintained at a temperature of about 550°C, thereby rapidly heating the test portion to the point where all volatile substances are released.

As the substance evaporates from the ampoule, the heavier residue remaining in the ampoule undergoes cracking and coking reactions during a given heating period, removing the ampoule, cooling it in a desiccator and weighing it again.

The method can be used to determine carbon residue amounts in the range of 0,01% (m/m) to 30,0% (m/m) remaining after evaporation and pyrolysis.

The presence of alkyl nitrates in distilled fuels or ash-forming additives in distillate or residual fuels will result in higher carbon residues than the corresponding values of the fuel without additives. These values may not correlate with a fuel's tendency to form deposits.
