ISO 4263 specifies a method for determining the aging behavior of gear oils in the CKC, CKD, CKS and CKT categories as defined in ISO 6743-6. Aging is accelerated by the presence of air and high temperatures, and degradation of the oil is judged by the change in kinematic viscosity at 100°C, the increase in insoluble content (precipitation number) and possibly acid number, residue content.
A test portion reacts in the absence of light, in the presence of air, and at a temperature appropriate for the type of industrial gear oil tested: 95°C for type CKC; 121°C for CKD type; 150°C for CKS and CKT types. After a period of 312 hours, kinematic viscosity increase at 100°C, insoluble content (precipitation number), increase in acid number (if necessary), sediment content by filtration, depletion of additives and substrate, red oxidation are determined.
Wash new air distribution tubes and oxidation cells with hot detergent solution and rinse thoroughly with potable water. Clean the inside of the oxidation cells and both the inside and outside of the air distribution tubes by soaking them in 24% surfactant cleaning fluid solution or washing them in a strong oxidizing acid solution for 10 hours. Rinse all parts thoroughly with potable water followed by water and allow to air dry in the oven or by a final acetone rinse followed by air drying at ambient temperature.
